Dimmitt Family Origins
Legend says, the Dimmitt family originated in France as Dymmett or D’Mette, and that the family of Huguenots left France and went to England because of religious persecution. Is that true? I don’t know.
What I have heard is that the earliest Dimmitt in America was Thomas Dymett (Dymmett, Dimmitt), born about 1620. Thomas went to America as a young man, arriving in June of 1635 aboard the ship America. He was single when he made the crossing, but likely married soon after his arrival. According to this unsourced evidence, he would have been 15 at the time of crossing.
In researching this, I have found a notation for a Thomas Rymett, aged 23, who sailed on the ship America from London to Virginia in June 1635:
“23rd June, 1635. The under-written names are to be transported to Virginea imbarqued in the America. Willm Barker Mr. pr. cert: from the Minister of the Towne of Bravesend of their conformity to the orders & disiplin of the church of England.” [Info from http://www.olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/tova_america1635.shtml]
It’s believed that Thomas had a son, William, about 1650.
The Dimmitt closest to present family is Sarah Josephine Dimmitt, born 24 February 1868, died 5 July 1935, of myocarditis and cholelithiasis. I’m gathering more information about her and will post it on her own page.
